Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to visit Gujarat for 2 days from August 25 to 26. His goal is to begin 1,449 PMAY houses and 130 shops in Ahmedabad city, Gujarat. This project, part of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) scheme, aims to provide affordable housing and commercial spaces to beneficiaries. Worth ₹133.42 crore, the initiative showcases the government’s ongoing efforts towards “Housing for All” and urban development in Gujarat.
These new houses are being built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY Urban) at Ramapir Tekra in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The primary objective of the government is to replace old slums with Safe and affordable homes. Additionally, 130 shops are also included in the project, allowing people to earn a living and support their families. This step by PM Narendra Modi shows the government’s focus on affordable housing, slum development, and a better urban lifestyle in Gujarat.
Regarding the policy, the Slum Rehabilitation and Redevelopment policy was implemented in 2013 by the Urban Development and Urban Housing Department of the Gujarat government.
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), Gujarat, has launched one of the leading initiatives in providing affordable housing. Moreover, more than 9 lakh PMAY Urban houses have already been completed across the state; as a result, thousands of families get their paved buildings. Not only this, but the government is also offering financial help under PMAY Gramin for rural areas, ensuring that both cities and villages move closer to the dream of “Housing for All”. With these efforts, Gujarat is becoming a model for other states in the field of affordable housing and urban development.
In Gujarat government data, over 9,66 lakh houses have been allocated in Gujarat under PMAY Urban, out of which nearly 9.07 lakh are already done. In India, more than 1.20 crore PMAY Urban houses have been approved, and 80 lakh have been distributed to families. Recently, in the village areas, the PMAY Gramin scheme helped around 3 crore housed across India in construction. As we know, this is a large-scale project, which is a small part of the mission whose name is Housing of All.
Recently, Mukhyamantri Protsahak Sahay yojana, people who have done house construction within six months get a certain amount, which is Rs. 20,000 for their first installment. 74,930 have already received an amount of Rs 149.86.
Looking ahead, the government plans the construction under PMAY Urban and PMAY Gramin so that every family in India can own a safe, secure, and permanent home. Such as, Ahmedabad project. Ahmedabad is connected with a larger vision of smart cities and Sustainable Urban Growth. People not only get housed but also enjoy better facilities, clear surroundings, and more job opportunities.
According to IBEF( Indian Brand Equity Foundation), across India and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana has sanctioned 118.64 lakh houses, with around 91.50 lakh already completed as of March 2025. On the rural side, the PMAY Gramin(rural) scheme has approved close to 3.62 Crore homes, and more than 2.74 crore have been completed by April 2025.
In Gujarat, about 10.60 lakh homes are approved under PMAY Urban as well, and nearly 7.93 lakh have already been completed by early 2023. In rural areas, the scheme sanctioned around 4.32 houses. Right now, 3.99 lakh houses are already ready.
One of the most crucial features of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is that it gives the same priority to women's ownership. In most cases, a new home is registered with two things: either it registers with the woman of the family or a joint ownership with her husband. Till now, crores of women across India have received houses in their name, which not only shelter them but also improve their social status, dignity, and decision-making power. The main motive of this rule is to give women strong financial support and security.
Affordable housing projects like PMAY are not just constructing houses but also create new job opportunities in slum areas. Like construction, the local market and supply chains. With new building constructions, small businesses like cement suppliers, electricians, and plumbers benefit directly. Meanwhile, families switch their permanent residence to their new home to enjoy better access to schools, healthcare, and clean surroundings, which definitely improves their overall quality of life. PMAY announced from 2016-17 to 2024-25, the central government set a target for houses, which was 8,43,168. Right now, 6,00,932 have been completed.
The inauguration of new houses in Gujarat under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is not just a housing project, but a single step for giving a stronger and more inclusive building to India. Every house represents security, an opportunity for a family to support their large dream. PMAY is shaping a future where every indian lives peacefully and feels safe in their permanent residence.
